This one is for the naturals. I have been wearing my hair in an Afro style for the last eight years (I decided to grow out a life-long perm during my first year of college). During that time, my hair has been long, short, bleached, and heat damaged. Products tend to work for a while, then my hair rebels and nothing is penetrating the thick mass of frizz and kinks. Couple that with the fact that I’m a beauty editor, and I’ve tried A LOT of products catered to curly and textured hair.
Recently I did a complete overhaul of my hair routine because anything that takes you eight hours to achieve isn’t worth the time. Yes, it took me over half of my waking weekend hours to style my hair—which is unacceptable. I thought to myself, “There has to be another way.” Plus, there are so many new innovative brands that didn’t even exist when I first went natural. So, I wanted to test out the new crop of custards, butters, co-washes, and twist creams to see what would actually make my life easier. These are the 10 that I keep in the current rotation. (And in case you’re wondering, my weekly hair routine is down to a slim three hours).
