“The marketing of labels with ‘natural’ can be very deceiving,” says celebrity makeup artist Roxanne Saffaie. “There is no strict definition, so brands can play on that word and still have non-natural ingredients added to the product.” In other words, there’s no official agency certifying products that call themselves “natural,” but they tend to avoid ingredients like parabens, sulfates, phthalates, petrolatum, or synthetic fragrances and focus instead on plant-based formulas.
